Guidance
School Counseling Services

School counseling services are an integral part of the total educational process at Keefe Technical High School. The primary goal and function of the department is to assist ALL students, through a planned program of developmental guidance and counseling services, to understand themselves in relation to their goals, abilities, interest, and needs. This planned program of services assists the student in developing the critical-thinking and decision-making skills necessary in order to formulate future goals and plans that help each student reach maximum growth potential. An appropriate school counseling program in the academic/technical, workplace readiness, and personal/social domains is one that provides each student with a sense of belonging and stability during his/her high school years.

Such a program is a shared endeavor of the student, parent, and the school counselor. The guidance faculty assumes the roles of facilitator, teacher, consultant, advocate, and counselor in order to assist each student in his/her social, psychological, educational, career/technical goals, and in the development of a relevant Career Plan. Counselors are readily available to students and families by appointment and without appointments in times of significant need.

Every student is assigned a school counselor who will work the student, parents, teachers, and other professionals. Primarily, the counselor assists the student in addressing concerns and decisions about course selections, school progress, personal and social relationships, and educational and career-technical planning. Some small group counseling and support groups are available. The school counseling department has a collection of career material and information on schools and colleges, scholarships, and supplementary material. It has established a network of referrals with community agencies to assist students and their families who are in need of specialized assistance.

Programs

A concentration in one of fifteen Career & Technical Programs plus a full schedule of academic courses makes up our students educational program. Keefe Technical School students follow the Massachusetts High School Program of Studies (MassCore) which includes: four years of English, four years of Math, three years of a lab Science, and three years of History. Students in all grade levels must meet these requirement for promotion. Additionally, all students must earn a passing grade in their Career and Technical area each year.

Students have the opportunity to benefit from a variety of articulation agreements with local colleges through their Career and Technical Programs. Qualifying juniors and seniors may participate in a dual enrollment program with area colleges. A Cooperative Education Program is also available for qualifying juniors and seniors to become involved in the world of employment experience during their Career and Technical week and earn money as well as credit toward their high school diploma.

Scholarship Information

Each year many scholarships become available to students.  Scholarships are awarded at the national, state and local level and criteria varies widely.  They can be awarded by charitable foundations, civic groups, corporations, professional trades and they often target certain criteria such as GPA’s, athletes, low-income applications, minorities, etc.  Scholarships are not always based upon merit.
The Keefe Tech Guidance Department works closely with students to assist them in the scholarship application process.
To be eligible to apply for scholarships through the Keefe Tech Guidance Department, students must complete the Scholarship Portfolio.  Seniors will have the opportunity to attend a Scholarship/Financial Aid Information Session scheduled each year to prepare them for the Scholarship Application Process.  This meeting will include instructions on how to complete the ScholarshipPortfolio and deadlines to be aware of in the process.
Some scholarships require their own individual applications with additional criteria.  These individual scholarship applications may be obtained in the Guidance Office and/or on the websites.

In addition to the many scholarships available through the Guidance Office, many large employers offer scholarships to employees and or their children. Students should be sure to ask their parents, Human Resources or Benefits Department if they have a scholarship program. Professional and trade organizations may offer scholarships to the children of their members so inquire there as well. Students can do their own internet searches based upon their areas of interest and personal background. Collegeboard.org/scholarship is an excellent place to start.
In the past, Keefe Tech students have been very successful recipients of many types of scholarships.

Senior Awards Night
Senior Awards Night is held prior to graduation each year in the Keefe Tech auditorium.  All of the known scholarships are presented that evening including Keefe Technical Education Awards (KTEA), Academic Awards and Senior Career and Technology Awards sponsored by the Keefe Tech Boosters Club.
In addition, previously presented scholarships/awards are announced at Senior Awards Night.
Our goal is to provide Keefe Tech students with as many scholarship opportunities as possible and encourage our students and families to be proactive in their pursuit of scholarships.
